Innovation festival celebrates schools

16 May 2008

Fifteen Hunter schools will be recognised today, Friday 16 May, for their achievements in Newcastle City Council’s ClimateCam for Schools program.

City Energy and Resource Manager PETER DORMAND says today's celebrations are part of Council's involvement in the Hunter Means Innovation festival.

"The core purpose of the festival is to showcase and inspire innovation in the community and the ClimateCam for Schools program certainly does that. By educating students about how to reduce energy and water use at school they can take this knowledge and apply it at home."

"Today the Lady Mayoress will award 31 gold stars for water and energy saving initiatives within the schools and the students and teachers involved in the program really do deserve recognition for the hard work they have put in to achieve the stars."

ClimateCam for Schools, launched in July 2007, tackles climate change at a local level by showing students how to reduce energy and water use in their schools. Each school involved in the program received a plaque to house the stars, awarded today, when the program started on 18 December 2007.

ClimateCam for Schools business sponsors are Macquarie Generation, Biodiesel Industries Australia, Port Stephens Council, Newcastle Port Corporation, The Herald and Newcastle City Council.

“ClimateCam for schools is a great program, it shows how much can be achieved when business and schools work together to take practical steps towards more efficient energy and water use,“ said Rob Cooper, Communications Manager for Macquarie Generation.

“Macquarie Generation is pleased to support ClimateCam for Schools and congratulates the children and teachers on their achievements,” Mr Cooper said.

Mr Dormand adds the benefits of working together have begun to show clear and measurable benefits for both the environment and the school community.

There are more than 70 Hunter schools registered for the ClimateCam for Schools Program still awaiting sponsorship. To register your interest in becoming a ClimateCam for Schools Business sponsor go to the ClimateCam website.
