Australia is one of the top producers of garbage in the world, throwing out approximately 14 million tonnes of rubbish each year.
Annually, the City of Newcastle produces over 200,000 tonnes of waste. About 50,000 comes from households - over 1kg of waste per person each day.
Whichever way you look at it, garbage is something we all produce as part of everyday living, but not something we often think about.
A wide range of services are now required to effectively manage our community's waste. Newcastle City Council is responsible for treating and disposing of waste safely.
Council's waste services form part of its greater environmental management plan for the City of Newcastle, with an aim to maintain a clean, green and sustainable environment for its residents.
