Newcastle boasts some 345 parks, which include 146 playing fields, 60 tennis courts, 87 netball courts, and 103 playgrounds.

Priorities for Council include:
- Replacing and improving equipment and facilities in playgrounds, parks and ovals
- Creating new cycleways
- Researching trends in sport and leisure activities and using that research to shape future projects
- Enlarging and improving Beresfield Golf Course to meet recreational and environmental needs.
