Community planning
Newcastle City Council has been developing and implementing Social Plans since 1988 and was one of the first Councils to do so.
The Local Government (General) Amendment (Community and Social Plans) Regulation was introduced in 1998 and made it compulsory for all Councils across New South Wales to develop and adopt Social or Community Plans.
Council has developed a new Community Plan (2006 - 2010) to cover cultural, recreational and social issues in Newcastle.
Social Impact Consultative Panel (SICP)
The Social Impact Consultative Panel provide advice to Council on the possible social impacts of policy matters, proposals before Council, external events, and government policies and actions.
The Panel is guided by the SICP Terms of Reference.
The idea for the Panel originated from the Social Issues Advisory Committee which was established after the 1989 Newcastle earthquake to examine the social issues involved in the renewal of the city.
The Panel meets on the second Thursday of the month.
Chair: Ms Nancy O’Connor
