Newcastle 2030

Newcastle 2030 will create a shared vision of the future for the City of Newcastle.

Facilitated by Newcastle City Council, the Newcastle 2030 project will seek to involve the whole community in the process of developing a meaningful community vision.

At the end of the Newcastle 2030 visioning activities, the many thoughts, ideas, images and stories shared by the people of Newcastle, will be brought together and used to create ‘Newcastle 2030’ – the vision for Newcastle.

Newcastle 2030 will be the guiding document upon which all future planning decisions on economic growth, transport, housing, lifestyle and the environment will be based.

How will the vision be realised?

The vision sets the direction in which we as a community would like to head over the next 20 years.

Development of the Community Strategic Plan will enable us to identify the steps we need to take over the next 10 years to move towards achieving the vision.

The plan will be developed and delivered as a partnership. It will identify strategic actions for Council and a framework for other stakeholders to understand the community’s vision for the future, enabling them to plan works and services for our local area. This collaboration will ensure council and the community are taking steps towards achieving outcomes that will create our future for Newcastle in 2030.

Newcastle 2030 will also inform the review of the Newcastle Local Environment Plan, as the outcomes sought by the community will be translated into our statutory planning framework.

Why plan for the future?

Creating sustainable communities for the future requires planned action – we need to proactively shape the growth and liveability of cities into the future. A sustainable community is not a static end product, but more a state of becoming. Core components of a sustainable community include social cohesion, functional economy, robust environment and sound infrastructure.

A long-term vision and clearly defined outcomes for Newcastle are key steps in moving towards a more sustainable community.

More benefits:

Planning holistically for the future, taking into consideration social, environmental and economic impacts and benefits

Focusing on outcomes rather than processes

Planning in partnership to deliver outcomes

The process

The development of a long term community vision and 10 year Strategic Plan will essentially address the following:

  • Where are we now?
  • Where are we going?
  • Where do we want to go?
  • How will we get there?

Importantly, the process will build on existing research and community input to date, so we are not starting with a blank sheet. Unlike most projects, the process will address social, environmental and economic considerations across the Newcastle LGA.

A Discussion Paper has been developed to reflect where we think we are now, the challenges that we might face in the future as well as the opportunities based on previous community consultation.

How you can be involved

Over the coming months there will be many opportunities for you to participate in this project. Newcastle 2030 is the community’s vision and Council is committed to ensuring as many people as possible contribute to collectively developing a vision for 2030.

The process will take place over two phases in 2009 and 2010:

- The first will take place between September and December 2009 and seek your input into the development of the 20 year vision and priority areas.

- The second phase will take place between February and August 2010 and will seek your input into the identification of short, medium and long term strategies to achieve the vision.

The Project Team will be out and about at community events and shopping centres across the Newcastle LGA looking for your input. Other activities include workshops and school holiday activities. To find out more visit our events page.

A good way to get involved and keep up to date with Council initiatives across Newcastle is to join Newcastle Voice.
