Newcastle City Council

Infrastructure works

This year Council received $1.9 million from the Federal Government for community infrastructure projects.

These funds will be spent on ten local infrastructure projects:

Beresfield Footpaths

Concrete foot paving will link various streets to the Beresfield Shopping centre precinct. The works will provide safer access to the Beresfield shopping centre by providing surfacing on the footway and reduce the need for pedestrians to walk in the road shoulders avoiding conflict with motor vehicles.

The project is estimated to cost $225,000.

Upgrading Braye Park

Braye Park is a large district park located in Waratah with sweeping views towards Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. The reserve contains a children's playground, picnic shelters and walking paths. Council will formalise dirt walking tracks into new concrete walking and cycle paths in the park, linking the playground to new pinic shelters. Seating and table will be installed under the shelters with some seating along the paths to provide rest areas. These paths will improve access to sections of the park.

The project is estimated at $200,000.

Bus stop renewal city-wide

Council will reconstruct bus shelters across the city to make sure they are accessible and comply with requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act. Works include paving, construction, tactile ground indicators, shelter, seat and sign relocations, ramps and handrails.

The project is estimated at $200,000.

Upgrading of Dixon Park

Council will install a district level playground at Dixon Park, Merewether. A shade shelter with seating and a drinking fountain will also be installed. Concrete walking paths will be installed to connect the playground to new picnic facilities, and trees will be planted for natural shade in the park.

The project is estimated at $150,000.

Upgrading of Lambton Park

The playground at Lambton Park will be upgraded from a local to a district park payground. New concrete walking and bicycle paths will be constructed connecting the playground to Lambton Swimming Pool, sporting areas and formal garden areas in Lambton Park. New trees will be planted to provide shade.

The project is estimated at $250,000.

West end tree planting

Mature trees will be planted along Honeysuckle Drive. This work will add to recently completed works by developers and provide an avenue of trees along the major access route into the CBD.

The project is estimated at $100,000.

Extension of Cleary Street car park

The carpark in Cleary Street, Hamilton will be expanded, doubling in size and including two disabled parking spaces. The project will improve parking and access in the Hamilton shopping centre.

The project is estimated at $300,000.

Suburban car park renewal

Ten suburban car parks have been identified for an upgrade, including new surfacing, kerb and gutter, landscaping and trees, fencing, drainage and line marking. Works will also include improved access for disabled drivers.

The project is estimated at $488,000.
