Council listens to the people of Newcastle and involves them in decision making about the future development of our city.

Council - working for youLocal government is concerned with matters close to your home like playing fields, libraries, garbage collection and recycling, deciding what sorts of buildings can be put up in different parts of the town and dog registrations.

Council is made up of Councillors who are elected every four years. They are chosen by the community to make decisions on their behalf.

In Newcastle the head of the council is the Lord Mayor who is elected by the people directly at the election.

Council employs over 900 people to provide advice to Councillors, implement Council policies, act on Council decisions and provide services, advice and information to the community.

The head of Council’s administration is the General Manager.
