Eco Star
The program involves the installation of water saving devices, storage tanks, energy-saving hot water, lighting control systems and on-site waste recycling at public recreation amenity blocks.
Six gold stars
Each facility will be rated on a scale from one to six, with six gold stars awarded to facilities which are fully supported by sustainable energy and water practices.
These stars will be displayed on stainless steel ECOSTAR™ plaques erected at the facilities to educate the community on their environmental performance.
As each amenity block is retrofitted with a new energy or water saving device, it will be awarded a new gold star until all six stars are achieved.
Simple, effective changes
The ECOSTAR™ Program illustrates how simple, effective changes can achieve substantial resource and cost savings.
The program can be transferred to all Council facilities, including libraries, art galleries and child care centres.
A marketable product
ECOSTAR™ has been developed as a marketable product that could easily be transferred to Councils and other organisations across Australia.
Newcastle City Council aims to transfer the knowledge gained and lessons learnt to other cities and towns throughout the life of this highly repeatable program.
