Public art in Newcastle plays a vital role in the celebration and interpretation of our city’s character and the people who live here.

Newcastle’s Public Art Program is one of the most dynamic programs of city enhancement through art in regional Australia. Newcastle Region Art Gallery coordinates the program in consultation and collaboration with the Public Art Advisory Committee.

Newcastle City Council’s Public Art and Placemaking Policy was revised in 2002 and includes principles that provide for an ongoing commitment to public art in Newcastle.

Public Art Advisory Committee

The Public Art Advisory Committee provides Council with expert Newcastle based vision and advice on the Public Art Program to strengthen and increase the professional practice of the arts in the public life of Newcastle.

The Committee is made up of twelve representatives who operate in an advisory capacity. The committee is comprised of local Councillors, community representatives, practising artists and relevant Council officers across the disciplines of architecture, engineering and cultural development.
