Paintings from remote communities: Indigenous Australian art from the Laverty collection, Sydney - 5 July to 31 August

An extensive collection of Indigenous Australian art has been built over many years by Dr Colin and Elizabeth Laverty. Today it is recognised as one of the most important private collections of Indigenous Australian art. This exhibition comprises paintings by 34 artists including Paddy Bedford, Eubena Nampitjin, Makinti Napanangka, Prince of Wales, Freddie Ngarmaliny Timms and Regina Wilson.

John Turier: Songs from the night train - 23 August to 12 October

John Turier’s first solo exhibition was held at NRAG in 1986. This exhibition, more than twenty years later, traces the development of Turier’s distinct visual idiom and unique aesthetic language.

Face to Face: digital portraiture - 6 September to 26 October

This exhibition developed by d/Lux Media Arts explores the portrait in the digital age and will include interactive works to engage and challenge our assumptions about identity, the self and the other.

Forgotten Gold: the lost sculptures of Sidney Nolan - 6 September to 26 October

Sidney Nolan is one of Australia's best known painters, his experiments with sculpture were virtually unknown until a discovery at an antiques fair in London in 1994 shed new light upon Nolan's desire to produce sculpture and to cast them in gold.

New Acquisitions 2006-2007 - 18 October to 23 November

Newcastle Region Art Gallery has developed a reputation as a bold collecting institution. This exhibition will feature the most recent works to enter the Gallery's collection.

Darryl Bowes: air tastes like water - 18 October to 23 November

Contemporary Hunter based artist Darryl Bowes will exhibit his most recent expressions of pictorial space. Bowes literally punctures the space in an ode to Lucio Fontana and Minimalism.

Dallas Bray: Haulage - 18 October to 23 November

Newcastle-based painter Dallas Bray paints fantasy narratives to provide wry commentary on ourselves and our environment. This exhibition will include a new commission and Bray’s most recent large-scale painting.

Ocean to Outback: Australian landscape painting 1850-1950 - 8 November to 1 February 09

An exhibition from the National Gallery of Australia documenting a century of Australian landscape, and tracing the development of the national collection from the colonial to modernist preoccupations.

Kilgour Prize 2008 - 6 December to 8 February 09

The second Kilgour Prize is sure to attract a wealth of entries. This bi-annual acquisitive painting prize is financed by the JN Kilgour bequest.
