Archaeology
Archaeology is the term given to the material evidence of past human activities. Archaeologists study this evidence to understand how people lived in the past.
The archaeological material in Newcastle provides evidence of the city's past. The material provides a record of the city's long relationship with coal mining and industrial activity, its early role as a penal outpost along with information about its domestic history. When archaeologists study this evidence a more complete picture of Newcastle's history is revealed.
Archaeological Management Plan 1997
Parts of Newcastle are included in the Newcastle Archaeological Management Plan, adopted by Council in 1997. The plan covers Newcastle, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, parts of Cooks Hill and The Hill.
Where a development is proposed on a property identified in the Plan, Council will require the applicant to obtain an excavation permit from the NSW Department of Planning - Heritage Branch.
