On street parking
Paid parking operates at various times throughout the city centre – please check kerbside signs for hours of operation.
Outside the times indicated, parking is free and unrestricted. Sometimes other parking conditions may still apply so please check the information on the kerbside signs before you park your vehicle.
Parking Meters & Machines
Parking Machines are located in many Newcastle streets and are either multi-bay parking meters or pay and display ticket machines. Parking machines accept 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins.
How to Use a ‘Multi-Bay’ Parking Meter
- Note the parking space number on the footpath and proceed to the nearest parking meter in the direction shown by the arrow
- Enter the number of your parking space on the keypad
- Insert coin(s)
- The meter will display the amount of time you have available to park.
How to use a ‘Pay & Display’ Ticket Machine
- Walk to the nearest ticket machine, you may need to cross the road
- Insert coin(s)
- Push the button to print your ticket
- Collect your ticket and place into in your car dashboard, so that it is visible from outside the car.

What to do if the parking meter or ticket machine is out of order?
If the machine is not working or you notice a fault, please contact Council’s Parking Machine Technicians on 1800 637 055. Please note, if the meter or ticket machine is out of order, time limits still apply.
