How to use this guide

This Guide tells you about the trains, buses, ferres, coaches and taxis that you can use to travel in the Lower Hunter Region. it also includes some advice on walking and cycling, and the benefits of using public transport.

Due to the file size of the whole document, the Guide has been broken into appropriate sections.

Transport in the Lower Hunter

The Transport in the Lower Hunter section provides a map key and details about the Transport Infoline which can be contacted on 131 500 or www.131500.info for information on trains and bus timetab,es. fares, trip planning and more.

Trains

Trains in the Lower Hunter Region are a fast, comfortable and convenient way to travel between many suburban areas and the main centres. Intercity and regional train services are provided by CityRail.

There are two rail lines:

  • Central Coast Line: Newcastle – Morisset – Gosford – Central (Sydney): Double-deck electric trains
  • Hunter Line: Newcastle – Maitland – Dungog - Scone: Diesel railcars.

Buses provide local transport between residential areas and main centres in the Lower Hunter Region. Most buses operate on fixed routes and stop at designated bus stops.

There are a range of late night transport services, including NightLink, free shuttle buses, managed ranks, roam buses, NightOwl buses and the Maitland Late Night Loop Bus.

The Lower Hunter Councils Transport Group

The Guide has been prepared by the Lower Hunter Councils Transport Group, with seed funding from the Lower Hunter Councils, the NSW Ministry of Transport (Local and Community Transport Branch) and the Federal Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources (Australian Greenhouse Office).

The Guide has been prepared with the co-operation and support of the Ministry of Transport, State Transit (Newcastle Bus and Ferry Services), RailCorp (CityRail), private bus and coach companies in the Region, Newcastle Taxis and Newcastle Airport Corporation.
