Georgetown

GeorgetownGeorgetown is a small suburb close to the CBD. It is a residential area that has good accessibility to local services such as transport, schools and shops.

According to the 2006 Census, there are 1,857 people in 888 dwellings (in 2001 there were 1800 residents in 887 dwellings).

Commercial Centre

Georgetown has a street of shops (Georgetown Road) linking to the Waratah commercial hub. This provides residents with mixed businesses.

History

Joseph Moate acquired land in the general area of Georgetown in 1853. Georgetown began as a residential area for workers from industries like the Copper Smelting Works (Goninans) located near by. By 1880, Georgetown was already described as a prosperous village. Goninans is still running today and the area is used mainly as an affordable residential suburb.
