Ocean baths
Newcastle Ocean Baths and Merewether Baths have a long history as popular swimming spots.
Newcastle Ocean Baths was opened in 1922 and Merewether Baths in 1935.
Opening hours and cleaning times
Opening hours at the Ocean Baths are subject to cleaning schedules.
Generally the Newcastle Ocean Baths are cleaned on a Thursday every week in summer.
Merewether Ocean Baths are cleaned twice per week in summer.
In the winter, both Baths are cleaned at least once per fortnight.

Water testing
Council aims to provide clean and tidy beach and ocean baths amenities, safe for all users.
Water tests are conducted at both of the Baths on a weekly basis by Council's Laboratory Technician. The Baths have a record of high water quality levels.
Event Bookings
Newcastle beaches and ocean baths are regularly used for:
- Major sporting and social events
- Motion Picture Filming
- Swimwear and other fashion shoots
- Artists
- Swimming Carnivals
- Wedding Parties
- Family & Social Functions
You need to get an event license from Council to hold any event at Newcastle's Beaches or Ocean Baths (excluding small informal events).
